Guinea Henweed has been used in Central America and the Caribbean for centuries as a natural treatment for arthritis, malaria, and rheumatism. Brazilian herbal medicine considers it an antispasmodic, diuretic, menstrual promoter, stimulant, and sweat promoter. Throughout South and Central America, Guinea is used by women to relieve birth pain and to facilitate childbirth, as well as to induce abortions. Guatemalans decoction with the leaf and take it internally for digestive ailments, such as sluggish digestion, flatulence, and fever. A leaf decoction is also used externally as an analgesic for muscular pain and skin diseases. In Cuba, herbalists decoct the whole plant and use it to treat cancer and diabetes and as an anti-inflammatory and abortive.

In the Amazon rainforest, Guinea Hen weed is used as part of a herbal bath in traditional witchcraft by local jungle herbal healers called curanderos. The root is more potent than the leaves. It is an effective pain reliever and insecticide.
